One person is dead and 15 people were apprehended in an interdicted maritime smuggling attempt off the coast of San Diego, according to reports from CBS News.
The US Border Patrol spotted a vessel traveling northbound off the coast of Point Loma shortly after 5am today. Agents interdicted the vessel off the coast of La Jolla. They arrived to find several distressed individuals in the surf zone. Border Patrol agents then contacted the San Diego Lifeguard. According to early reports, 15 individuals were apprehended. One individual in critical condition was provided medical attention but later died. The exact cause of death is still unknown. Rough surf was reported at the time, and many individuals were missing life jackets.
Fiscal year 2020 was a record year for maritime apprehensions in the San Diego sector, with 1273 apprehensions in the maritime environment. This fiscal year which ends at the end September is quickly approaching 1100 apprehensions.
